Background of the Study
Dowry and bride price practices are deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of many Nigerian communities, including Ikole Local Government Area, Ekiti State. These practices, while serving as markers of cultural identity and social transactions, also carry psychological implications for individuals involved in matrimonial arrangements (Afolabi, 2023). The negotiation and fulfillment of dowry and bride price can result in significant emotional stress, anxiety, and identity conflicts, particularly among women who are often subjected to rigid cultural expectations (Adeyemi, 2024). Recent studies indicate that these practices may contribute to feelings of inadequacy and social pressure, influencing both marital satisfaction and overall mental health (Okoro, 2025). This study examines the psychological implications of dowry and bride price practices, analyzing how these cultural transactions affect individual self-esteem, marital dynamics, and community perceptions. By integrating qualitative narratives with quantitative assessments, the research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the mental health challenges associated with these practices and to recommend culturally sensitive interventions (Ogunleye, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Dowry and bride price practices in Ikole have raised concerns regarding their psychological impact on individuals, particularly women. Many participants report stress, diminished self-esteem, and marital discord as a result of these cultural practices (Ibrahim, 2024). The lack of systematic research on the psychological implications of these practices creates challenges in developing effective interventions. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the mental health consequences of dowry and bride price, providing evidence to inform culturally appropriate policy and support programs (Chinonso, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the psychological effects of dowry and bride price practices.
To examine the impact on marital satisfaction and individual self-esteem.
To propose culturally sensitive interventions to mitigate negative psychological outcomes.
Research Questions:
What psychological effects are associated with dowry and bride price practices?
How do these practices influence marital satisfaction and self-esteem?
What interventions can alleviate the psychological burden associated with these practices?
Research Hypotheses:
Dowry and bride price practices are associated with increased psychological stress.
These practices negatively affect marital satisfaction and self-esteem.
Culturally sensitive interventions can mitigate the adverse psychological effects.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the psychological implications of dowry and bride price practices in Ikole. The findings will assist cultural leaders, policymakers, and mental health professionals in designing interventions that promote psychological well-being while respecting traditional values (Oluwatoyin, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the psychological implications of dowry and bride price practices in Ikole Local Government Area, Ekiti State, and does not extend to other cultural practices or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
